How to Draw a Cute and Kawaii Princess with Simple Shapes

Up to now, princesses have been the most influential role model to girls of all ages. They are kind, graceful, and beautiful, and they are pretty much any girl would want to be one day.

Right underneath the face, draw two curved lines to structure a neck. Then, draw two downward diagonal lines from the shoulder all the way down to the stomach. This figure outlines the upper body or the torso of the princess.

Thankfully, children now have a lot more choices when it comes to drawing a princess. No need to make the same Cinderella-like version over and over again when countless books and movies now offer so many more variations of beautiful young women to admire and to draw.

If you follow me on twitter or facebook, you may may have seen me travel from stadium to stadium with my sketchbook drawing Disney Princesses dressed in the local team's gear. It started as a personal project, but fans started finding me at the games and I started giving them the drawings I created. Over the past couple years, I've given away over a hundred #BallparkPrincess drawings in over 50 ballparks, stadiums and arenas (and the occasional coffee shops) to daughters and sons, wives and husbands, girlfriends, and boyfriends, and mothers and fathers who share the passion of baseball and art.

All drawing steps are included here which make it fun and simple to follow! Plan for this drawing to take about 20 minutes, but the drawing process can actually take longer if a background is included as well.

Give the dress some poofy sleeves and use some more curved lines to define the shape of the dress on the chest. Make the bottom of the skirt a bit bigger by adding some bumps, and give the princess her crown.

Uppal has been studying the effects of Disney princesses on girls internationally since 2009. In a world where Disney's TV channels are broadcast in 133 countries, and its films and merchandise pervade even more, she wanted to see how girls of different nationalities perceived the idea of a princess.

Disney has made an effort to diversify and empower its princess cast in recent decades, responding to criticisms that the brand is too white and casts women in passive roles. Since the introduction of Jasmine in 1992, four young women of color have been added to the company's official princess lineup: Pocahontas, Moana, Tiana and Mulan.

But Uppal says her report would indicate that this new wave of diverse princesses "has not replaced images of popular white princesses in Disney that have a much older and global presence." Most girls surveyed preferred the "classic," white princesses to Mulan and Jasmine. And while not all girls in India and Fiji were familiar with Aladdin, Mulan and Pocahontas, nearly all had watched Cinderella and Snow White.

Asked by Uppal about the origins of princesses like Jasmine and Mulan, a number of girls in India and Fiji maintained these princesses were "American," not from the Middle East or China as the movies portray.
